WELLBEING

生理的に無理: When the Body Has Closed

  • Desire
  • Marriage
  • Consent
  • The nervous system

Low desire is an absence: you wait and nothing arrives. Aversion is a presence: something arrives, fast, before any thought, and it is an objection. Almost every resource treats the second as a severe case of the first, which is why the standard advice — schedule it, add novelty, do it anyway — reliably makes it worse. Adding stimulation to an absence sometimes helps. Adding stimulation to an alarm is turning up the volume.

  • General well-being information

There is a state this library has written forty essays around and never once written about directly, and it is the one women search for most and say out loud least: not that desire has faded, but that the body has closed. That when he reaches over, something arrives before any thought does, and what it says is no. Sometimes toward a specific person. Often toward a person she does not otherwise want to leave.

The Japanese phrase for it is 生理的に無理, and part of why this page is hard to write is that the phrase is so good. It carries the involuntariness exactly — this is not a decision she has made and not an attitude she could adjust — and it is the only available phrase that does. It is also, in one specific respect, misleading, and the misleading part is where the whole page ends up.

Two things this page will not do. It will not tell you what your marriage is — that is not knowable from here and not anybody else’s to decide. And it will not tell you the feeling is wrong, because it is not wrong; it is information, and the whole difficulty is that almost everybody who has offered you advice about it has treated it as an obstacle to be got past rather than as a report to be read.

This is not low desire, and the difference decides everything

  • General well-being information

Low desire is an absence. You wait, and nothing arrives. There is no objection in it — if something did arrive you would follow it — and the experience is closer to a flat afternoon than to a refusal. This library has written about it at length, and the honest account of it involves responsiveness, context, and the fact that a great many women do not experience desire in advance at all.

Aversion is a presence. Something arrives, it arrives fast, it arrives before deliberation, and it is an objection. The stomach does something. The shoulders do something. There may be a physical recoil so small that nobody sees it and so unmistakable that you cannot pretend it did not happen. This is not more of the first thing. It is a different thing, produced by a different system.

Which is why the standard advice fails so specifically, and it is worth seeing why rather than concluding that you failed at it. The usual prescriptions — schedule it, add novelty, go away for a weekend, do it anyway and the feeling will follow — are all attempts to raise input. Raising input into an absence occasionally works. Raising input into an objection is turning up the volume on an alarm, and the alarm does what alarms do: it gets louder, and then, when nobody responds to it, it stops producing anything at all and you are left with a numbness that is harder to work with than the aversion was.

In the language this library has used elsewhere: the accelerator and the brake are separate systems, and almost everything on offer is aimed at the accelerator. What has happened here is in the brake, and a brake does not respond to being accelerated against. It responds to the removal of what it is braking for.

What it is reporting, and what it cannot tell you

  • General well-being information

Here is the precise claim, and it has to be precise or the page becomes either dismissive or inflammatory. The body’s no is reliable that something is being refused. It is unreliable about what. It is an alarm rather than a diagnosis: it tells you the sensor fired, and it does not tell you which room the smoke is in.

So here is what actually produces it, and you are not being asked to pick one — several are usually running at once. Resentment with no route to expression, which is the most common by a wide margin in long marriages and which almost never announces itself as resentment: it presents as tiredness, as irritation at small things, and as a body that has stopped being available to somebody it is still angry with. A history of sex that was technically consented to and not actually wanted — the yes given because a no would have needed a reason — which teaches the body that the sequence ends in something it did not choose. Pain that was never named, so the body learned that the sequence ends badly and began objecting several steps earlier than the pain.

And the ones that are physical rather than relational, which get missed because the situation looks relational. Hormonal change making the tissue genuinely uncomfortable, which is its own page here and which produces avoidance long before a woman connects the two. Medication — several very widely prescribed classes affect desire and response directly, and nobody is obliged to mention it when they hand you the prescription. Exhaustion, and specifically the exhaustion of a woman who has been touched by children all day and whose entire remaining appetite for being handled was spent by four in the afternoon.

And then the one that is hardest to write and would be dishonest to leave out: sometimes the body has correctly identified that this is a relationship she does not want to be in. Not always. Not even usually. But sometimes, and a page that listed six explanations and carefully omitted the seventh would be doing the thing this library exists not to do. What matters is that it is one item on a list rather than the conclusion, and that nothing on this page can tell you which item is yours.

生理的に無理, and the one thing the phrase gets wrong

  • Japanese social context

The phrase is doing two jobs and it does one of them beautifully. 生理的 places the reaction in the body rather than in the will, which is exactly right and is the part no English phrase manages — she is not being difficult, she has not chosen this, and no amount of deciding otherwise touches it. Anybody who has told her to just relax has been answered in advance by that word.

The second job is the one to look at. 無理 says impossible, and impossible is a statement about permanence. That is a much larger claim than the body actually made. The body reported an intensity — this is not negotiable right now, and pushing on it will make it worse — which is true. The phrase converts that into a fixed property of her, of him, or of the two of them together, and once it is a fixed property there is nothing to investigate and only two available moves: endure or leave.

This library has made the same observation twice now about different words, so it is worth stating as the general case: a phrase that names a verdict rather than a state closes the question of what produced it. 毒親 does it to a parent. HSP does it to a temperament. 生理的に無理 does it to a body, and of the three it is the most consequential, because the underlying thing is the most changeable and the phrase is the most absolute.

None of which means you should stop using it. It is the accurate word for how it feels and you should not have to soften your own experience to make it easier for anybody to hear. It means only that when you use it to yourself, it is worth adding four words at the end — right now, with him — because those four words are the difference between a description and a sentence.

The one thing not to do

  • General well-being information

Do not push through it. This is the most important sentence on the page and it contradicts a great deal of what is said in both languages about saving a marriage.

The mechanism is not moral and it is not delicate. Having sex you are averse to, for a good reason, teaches the brake that it was right. The sequence ran, the objection was overridden, and the outcome was something you did not want — which is precisely the input that produced the brake in the first place. So the aversion does not stay where it was. It broadens: first the act, then the approach, then the bedroom, then the hand on the shoulder in the kitchen. Many women arrive at a state where all touch has become a threat and cannot work out how it spread that far, and this is how.

It follows directly from the position this house holds everywhere else, and it is worth saying in its general form because it applies well beyond this. A body overridden for a good reason is overridden exactly as hard as one overridden for a bad one. The body does not know which argument it is being overridden for. Saving a marriage is a good argument. It is still an override, and the body still files it as one.

Which leaves a practical problem, and it should be named rather than glossed: a woman who stops having sex she does not want, in a marriage where that sex was the thing keeping the peace, has not solved anything by Friday. She has stopped making it worse, which is a real and undervalued achievement, and she now has a conversation to have that she has been postponing with her body.

What there is instead

  • General well-being information
  • Moonlight's application

The move that has an actual mechanism behind it is unbundling. Three separate things have usually been collapsed into one — sex, touch, and the relationship — and when the first one becomes unbearable a woman withdraws all three, because they arrive together and she cannot take one without the others following. The withdrawal of the second and third then generates distance and resentment, which feed the first. That loop is the engine, and it can be interrupted without resolving anything about the marriage.

The intervention is non-sexual touch with an explicit guarantee that it goes nowhere, and the guarantee is the active ingredient rather than the touch. A hand held for ten minutes with no possibility of escalation is a completely different physiological event from the same hand held with the possibility open, because in the second case a part of her is monitoring for the turn and monitoring is the opposite of receiving. This library has argued the attention half of that elsewhere: watching yourself and feeling something draw on the same finite supply.

The guarantee has to be real to work, which means it has to be one-sided in the way this house states everywhere: what was agreed can always be contracted, instantly and without a reason, and can never be expanded today. A guarantee that quietly means probably not is not a guarantee and the body will read it correctly, because reading exactly that is the thing it has become good at.

Three things worth checking in parallel, because they are cheap and they are the ones most often sitting underneath. Whether any of this started within a few months of a new medication. Whether there is pain, even minor, even only sometimes, because the body will begin objecting several steps before the step that hurts. And whether the tissue itself has changed, which from the middle forties onward is common, is treatable, and is almost never volunteered by anybody.

What honestly happens next

  • General well-being information

Sometimes it resolves. A woman whose aversion was resentment finds that when the resentment gets a route — said out loud, or acted on, or simply acknowledged by somebody — the body reopens over months rather than days, and she is surprised by how completely, because she had concluded it was a fixed property of her.

Sometimes it resolves partly, and this is probably the most common outcome and the one nobody describes: touch comes back and sex does not, or sex comes back in a narrower form than before, and the couple arrives at an arrangement that is smaller than what they had and larger than what they feared. That is not a failure. A great many long partnerships are running on exactly that and are not unhappy.

And sometimes it does not resolve, and the marriage continues as an arrangement — this country has more names for that than most, and a companion page here goes through them — or it does not continue. A page that promised recovery would be lying, and the lie would cost you the thing this page is actually for, which is being able to trust the next sentence.

And the thing this house owes you before you book anything

  • Moonlight's application

A woman in this state does sometimes come to a place like this one, and we should say what is honestly on offer and what is not. What an hour here can supply is the two conditions a marriage in this state structurally cannot: touch with a ceiling that is guaranteed rather than hoped for, and a body in the room with no accumulated history attached to it. Those are not small, and for some women they are exactly the missing inputs.

What it cannot supply is anything about your marriage. An hour here is not couples work, resolves nothing that is running between two people, and will not by itself change what happens at home on Sunday. If the thing underneath is resentment with no route, the route is not in this building.

And there is one thing we would rather say now than let you find out alone afterwards, because it is the most destabilising possible outcome of an hour here and it happens. A woman who has concluded that her body is broken, and who then finds that it works entirely normally with somebody it has no history with, has learned something true and has not necessarily learned what she wanted to. It is good news about her body. It is a harder piece of news about the other thing, and it does not stay in the room. We would not be honest with you if we took your money without having said it.

So the short version, if the rest was too long to hold. What you have is not low desire and the advice written for low desire will make it worse. It is a brake, it fired for a reason, and the reason is usually on a list of ordinary things rather than a verdict about you or about him. Do not push through it, because pushing teaches it that it was right and it will spread.

And the four words worth adding whenever you say 生理的に無理 to yourself: right now, with him. Not because the feeling is smaller than that, but because those four words leave a question open that the phrase on its own closes — and every single thing on this page that could help you lives inside that question.
