The Atlas of Stillness

Places across Tokyo, Saitama, Gunma, Tochigi and Ibaraki where a woman can walk, bathe, make something with her hands, or simply sit still, and the days in the year worth planning around.

Every place was checked as open and carries its source, the date it was verified and a Google Maps link. The scores are a curator’s reading of stillness, welcome to a woman alone, access, value and wonder; they are not a ranking of businesses. Prices and hours change, so confirm before you travel.

  1. I · Mapfive prefectures, true coordinates
  2. II · Calendarrated events, month by month
  3. III · Journeyweather, budget and mood in; a route out

How to read this page

The Map draws the five prefectures to their true outlines and every place on its own coordinates. Filter by category, mood, budget, month, whether a place suits a woman alone, or whether it works in the rain. A card carries the curator’s note, five scores, a note for going alone, the facts, access, caveats and the source.

The Calendar rates each recurring event on eight measures, from relevance and Moonlight-ness to the cause it serves, and counts crowds against it. Beside each month sit the places that are at their best in it.

The Journey room composes a day trip or a weekend from where you start, how long you have, your budget, the month, the sky and your mood, then opens the route in Google Maps. Places you add from the map come first.
