  • Fulfilled Singles

    The readiness frame is a tax on the present, friendship is the form that starves quietest, and nobody is assigned to notice you — so the noticing has to be dated.

  • Why It Stopped Being Automatic

    Friendship up to about twenty-five is supplied by an environment — proximity, repetition, and a setting relaxed enough for a guard to come down. Adult life removes all three at once and does not announce it, so the friends who survive are the ones where something replaced the mechanism rather than the ones you liked most. Roughly fifty hours together to reach casual friend, ninety to reach friend, two hundred for close friend. "I cannot make friends" is a claim about a person. "I have not spent fifty hours with anybody new since 2019" is a claim about a calendar.

Japan settled that question about four hundred years ago, by trade regulation rather than philosophy, and the answer had a registry behind it.   • Money, and the Objection That Is Not About Money

    The feeling that payment spoils intimacy has a name in the literature — hostile worlds — and a substantial body of evidence against it. If money contaminated intimacy, the midwife and the hospice nurse would be contaminated too. Nobody believes that, which means the objection is about something else.
