A timid woman rents a wedding, loses a marriage and is hired as a maid by a dying woman — Iwai on rented intimacy.
Nanami Minagawa, a timid temporary teacher, meets Tetsuya Tsuruoka through a social network and marries him almost as easily as buying something online. His side of the wedding is crowded, hers nearly empty, and he asks her to fix it. She turns to Amuro, a smooth jack-of-all-trades she knows online, who supplies actors to play her relatives and friends. Finding an earring in their flat, she hires Amuro to look into Tetsuya. A man claiming to be the boyfriend of Tetsuya's lover lures her to a hotel room, and a video of her there reaches her mother-in-law, Kayako, who accuses her of cheating and exposes her parents' divorce. Nanami loses her marriage and her home. It was Amuro, working for Kayako, who set her up.
Homeless, she works as a hotel maid until Amuro offers her other jobs: playing a relative at a stranger's wedding, where her fake sister is a lively actress, Mashiro Satonaka, and then living in as a maid in an empty mansion for a million yen a month. Mashiro turns out to be the other maid. She goes out to act daily and comes home drunk. When she falls ill, her manager tells Nanami that Mashiro works in adult video, rents the mansion herself and is nearly broke. Nanami suggests they find a cheap flat together. On the way home they try on wedding dresses, drive back in them and hold a party for two. Mashiro says the world is too kind to her, and asks Nanami to die with her. Nanami says yes, and they fall asleep having promised each other love.
In the morning Amuro arrives with an undertaker Mashiro had booked. She was dying of cancer and had paid him to find a friend who would die with her. Mashiro has taken her own life; Nanami is alive. At the funeral the actor who once played Mashiro's father weeps real tears. Nanami and Amuro take the ashes to Mashiro's estranged mother, who scorns her daughter's work, then, drinking, strips naked to understand it; Amuro, weeping, does the same, and Nanami laughs through her tears. Nanami moves into an ordinary flat and finds teaching work again. Amuro brings her discarded furniture, and when she sees him off, her voice is brighter than before.

Yukimasu Amuro’s story
Amuro is a smooth jack-of-all-trades who hires out stand-ins. He fills Nanami's side of her wedding with actors, then, paid by her mother-in-law, sets her up in a hotel room while pretending to rescue her, and her marriage collapses. After that he keeps finding her work: a relative's part at a stranger's wedding, then a live-in maid's job at a million yen a month. All along Mashiro, who is dying of cancer, has paid him to find her a friend who will die with her. The morning after, he arrives at the mansion with the undertaker she booked. He and Nanami take Mashiro's ashes to her estranged mother, and when the mother strips naked to understand her daughter's work, he strips too, weeping. At the end he brings Nanami discarded furniture for her new flat.

Why it matters
A Bride for Rip Van Winkle is about intimacy that can be bought: friends found online, wedding guests hired by the hour, a husband chosen as easily as a purchase, even a companion in death paid for in advance. Shunji Iwai, who began the story in drafts written after the 2011 disaster, lets that marketplace be cruel and, strangely, kind, so that a hired family weeps real tears at a funeral. The issues are loneliness in a networked city, marriage as a performance, sex work and the contempt it draws, and a love between two women that arrives dressed as a game and turns out to be the truest thing in the film. Nanami's journey, from someone things happen to towards someone who can speak in her own voice, is small and complete. Under the gentleness sits a harder question: whether a kindness bought with money can still be love.
