Korea's first gay dating reality; a milder, more tender cousin of The Boyfriend.
His Man, billed as South Korea's first dating reality series for gay men, puts a group of single men in a shared house for about a week to look for a partner. The first season, released on Wavve from July 2022 in eleven episodes, begins with six men who may not tell each other their ages or jobs and who have given up their phones. On the first day they are sent on dates in random pairs, and each night a 'love hotline' lets them call the man they like. A seventh man arrives, then an eighth, and only then do they reveal their ages and occupations. Dates are asked for by letter, and one morning the men tell each other, in tears, what being gay has cost them. In the last episode each man drops a letter with his phone number into the mailbox of the man he wants, and calls the number waiting in his own; only a mutual choice connects. Two couples leave together: Kim Chang-min and Lee Jeong-hyun, drawn to each other from the first episode, and Hyeok-jun, the most sought-after man in the house, with Jeong-ho.
Second and third seasons followed in June 2023 and June 2024, fourteen episodes each, adding voice messages, dates that risk open rejection and confessional games of Jenga. The second ends with two couples. Jun-seong, drawn to Seong-ho from the first day, wins him, and they are still together after filming; Min-seong, torn between Hyeong-jin and Hyeong-jun, chooses Hyeong-jin. The third ends with three, the most of any season: Seong-min and Jae-seung, Han-min and Yeong-jun, Myeong-gyun and Min-seon. The fourth, from January 2026, is a reshoot: its first filming could not be used, and eight of its ten men return, among them Park Jae-ha and Lee Hyeong-jun, a couple at the end of that first shoot who have since split. Oh Min-seong, the second season's Min-seong, joins later. The men must rank one another, and the vote sends Park Jae-ha home. Two couples leave at the end: Lee Hyeong-jun with Oh Min-seong, and Kim Seon-uk with Lee Hyeon-jun.

Why it matters
His Man matters partly because it exists: it gives gay men in Korea the ordinary pleasures of a genre that had always been built for other people, the nervous first date, the late-night call, the jealousy when someone new walks in. The show frames its men in the language of BL, the boys'-love romance genre, which makes them easy to look at; the series is most affecting when it stops looking and listens, as on the morning when the men talk about what hiding, or not hiding, has cost them. Its rules, no ages, no jobs, no phones, are meant to strip away status, and they also give the men a rare space where the question is not whether to be gay but whom to like. What it leaves open is whether romance shown as ordinary is itself an argument.
