Ex-couples move into one house and date other people while their former partners watch; the cruellest premise on Korean TV, and the most honest.
EXchange puts former couples under one roof. Each season several pairs of exes, some apart for months and some for years, move into a shared house for weeks without telling the others who their ex is. On the first day ages and jobs stay hidden; contact details may not be swapped, cooking and cleaning go by rota, and any feeling may be shown except an outright confession. Each round they send a text message to the person they like, and notices telling each of them whether their ex chose them make the house's feelings visible, including the pain of watching an ex choose someone else. As the pairs of exes come out, dates are assigned, and at the end each person makes a final choice: to leave with their ex, with someone new, or alone. A studio panel, the rapper Simon Dominic, the comedian Lee Yong-jin, the actor Kim Ye-won and the singer Yura, watches and comments.
The first season (2021, fifteen episodes) ended with Ko Min-young choosing her ex, Lee Ju-hwi, over Yoon Jeong-gwon, who had pursued her, while Kim Bo-hyun left with Kwak Min-jae rather than Seon Ho-min, her boyfriend of three years and five months; Ko and Lee announced their engagement in 2026. The second (2022, twenty episodes) ended with three couples. Lee Na-yeon went back to her ex, Nam Hee-doo; Park Na-eon chose Kim Tae-i; and Sung Hae-eun, six years with her ex, Jeong Gyu-min, and in tears over him to the last, chose Jeong Hyun-gyu. Hae-eun and Hyun-gyu were the season's one new couple to stay together after the show, until they reportedly split in 2025. The third (2023 to 2024), made by a new director, also ended with three: Seo Dong-jin parted from Song Da-hye, his partner of thirteen years, and left with Lee Hye-won, while two pairs of exes got back together. The fourth (2025 to 2026), which moved partway through to Kamakura and Shonan in Japan, ended with four couples, two of them reunited exes; three were still together when the finale aired.

Why it matters
EXchange is built on one of the most painful places to stand in love: watching a former partner, the one who left or the one who was left, fall for someone else across the kitchen. The premise invites cruelty. What turned it into a phenomenon, ten straight weeks at the top of TVING's viewing chart in 2021 and a major driver of the platform's subscriptions, is that it also makes room for something couples rarely get: the chance to talk about why it ended, at a distance of months or years, and to decide with the other person in the room. Relationships of six, seven and thirteen years come apart and sometimes come back together on camera. The issues are attachment and jealousy, the difference between missing someone and wanting them back, and the ethics of turning private grief into entertainment. What it leaves open is whether closure is something two people can reach together.
