Former couples move into one house without revealing who dated whom — reunion or transit to someone new.
Love Transit is the Japanese version of the Korean series EXchange. Five former couples spend about a month together, first in a hotel in Yokohama and then in Hokkaido, without revealing who used to date whom, and each must watch an ex begin to fall for someone else. At the end, at a bus stop, two people who board the same bus leave as a couple. In the first season, streamed from June 2023, the comedy duo EXIT, the actors Yuto Isomura and Mayu Matsuoka, Kayoko Okubo and later MEGUMI comment from the studio.
The first pair revealed is Eri, a nurse who still hopes to get back together, and Masashi, a candle artist of thirty-six, who seems to have moved on and heads straight for Ami, an apparel director. Eri cries. Ami wants nothing from her own ex, the hairdresser Kohei, but he does not get in her way: he tells her he still loves her, leaves the choice to her and stays on her side. Mai, an actor, meets Daiki, her first boyfriend, ten years on and cannot love the successful entrepreneur he has become. Arisa, a university student, can, and the security he offers draws her away from her ex Kyohei, an actor and model who keeps undoing himself with jealousy. Ruka and Yoshihito, an American football player, keep fighting.
At the bus stops four couples form, three of them old ones. Yoshihito apologises for the fights and asks Ruka back; what moved her, she says, was seeing him weep in front of everyone on the last night. Masashi, to the studio's astonishment, goes not to Ami but to Eri, saying he had never met her halfway, and she boards. Kohei tells Ami he is not asking to reunite but to start again, and she reads him a letter accepting. Arisa hears out both Kyohei and Daiki and boards Daiki's bus; Kyohei rides away alone in tears. Mai apologises to Daiki for how she spoke to him and goes home alone, head high.
Later seasons kept the format; the third, in 2025, took the holiday to Ishigaki.

Why it matters
Most dating shows begin with strangers. Love Transit begins with a breakup, and asks what it does to a person to watch someone they loved fall for someone else across the room. Rintaro of EXIT, one of its hosts, said he first thought the premise cruel: a former partner's next romance is the one thing nobody should have to see. The show's interest lies in what that exposure makes possible. People who parted over small worries that piled up, or over ten years of change, see from outside what went wrong and choose with that knowledge. Real Sound's critic concluded that the reunions which worked came from people who stopped trying to reunite and tried instead to be loved again, by showing they had changed or by accepting that the other had. Kayoko Okubo, past fifty and long bored by the genre, said it was the first in years that made her want to know what happened next.
