The Future Diary is Netflix's revival of a TBS segment that was a hit from 1998 to 2002. Two strangers are each given a diary that sets out their love story in advance, and must do what it says. They cannot swap contact details or meet off camera, and the last page is already written: they will part forever. Daigo hosts from the studio.
In the first season (December 2021), Maai, a nineteen-year-old student in Okinawa, and Takuto, a twenty-four-year-old chef in Tokyo from Hokkaido, meet in Yokohama. At once Maai receives a secret entry: however she feels, she may not tell him she likes him until the end. On a cruise they are given matching bracelets. In his Hokkaido home town the sunflower field where the diary told them to kiss is not yet in bloom; they promise to return in August. In Sapporo his own secret entry sends him up Asahidake to build her a snowman, her first snow; if he misses her seven o'clock bus, the story ends. He misses it, and each cries alone. A clue in her bracelet revives it. By a campfire on an Okinawa beach Takuto declares his feelings; Maai, bound by the diary, answers that she has never seen him that way.
On their last date, in yukata at a shrine, they read the diary back, and a final entry at last lets Maai say she loves him. Fireworks open like ninety-nine sunflowers, the number that means eternal love; they kiss and part, as written. One more page follows: if their love is real, they will meet again at the promised place, and this time they may choose. Maai fears the distance. Takuto waits in the sunflower field, now in bloom, and she comes. The last page is blank. They became a couple, long-distance, and met each other's families.
The second season (May 2022) is a triangle: Moka, an office worker, dates the bartender Akimitsu and the medical student Koyo, who become friends, and chooses Akimitsu. After the diary parts them, a last entry lets Koyo reunite them.

Why it matters
The Future Diary asks an unfashionable question for a genre built on authenticity: can a feeling that begins as an instruction become real? The original was a national event; three of its theme songs sold a million copies each, and in 2000 they held the top two places on Oricon's annual singles chart. The revival keeps the paradox intact. Its most affecting device is a restraint rather than a romance. Maai is forbidden to say she likes Takuto, so for most of the season a young woman hides her feelings from a man who is openly declaring his, and the gap between what is felt and what is allowed to be said becomes the story. It shows how much of courtship is timing and permission, and how often the words come late. Then the script runs out. The last page is blank, and the one part never written is whether two people will choose each other.
