Two southern islands, daily forced shuffles — chance and timing decide who ends up with whom.
Shuffle Island is ABEMA's swimsuit dating game, first streamed in November 2021 and in its seventh season by July 2026. Men and women are split between two islands at a tropical resort for seven nights, and several times a day a shuffle sends members across, by nomination or by lot, pulling pairs apart and throwing others together. On the last day a confession counts only between people on the same island. The comedian Hiromasa Yashiki of New York hosts, joined by Minami Minegishi from the second season and Yukipoyo from the fourth.
The fourth season, streamed from July to September 2023, was set on two islands off Phuket, Island Pink and Island Blue, with fifteen members. Taisei, an artist, and Jona, a model from the Philippines, fall for each other early but keep being shuffled apart. Rino, a burlesque dancer, pursues Ren, a gym owner, from the first day. Ren pursues Nonoko, a Pilates instructor and the season's most wanted woman, and so do the comedian Taiyu and the boxer Yoshimitsu. Rin stays single-minded about Andrew, who arrives in the second episode.
At the last shuffle the men draw shells, and a red shell means moving. Shuto draws one that takes him away from Rika, the former idol he likes, and gives up. On Island Blue, where only Taisei wants to move, Taisei draws the red shell, a one-in-five chance, and crosses to Jona; the time apart, he tells her, only made him surer. Four couples form: Taisei and Jona; Katsuto, a professional surfer, and Kurara, a club dancer; the actor Ryudai and Maharu, who says she had kept her own declaration for that day, and that her happiness is hers to decide; and Andrew and Rin, who he says put him first from beginning to end. Ren, Taiyu and Yoshimitsu all confess to Nonoko. She turns down all three and flies home alone. Rino's feelings for Ren go unanswered.

Why it matters
Shuffle Island is the most openly engineered show of its kind, and ABEMA says so: its producer described it as a romance built on a children's picking game, with stronger rules and more show than the channel's other dating series. Its subject is how much of love comes down to proximity and luck. The rule that only people on the same island may confess turns every shuffle into a small disaster or a reprieve, and a Real Sound writer who tallied five seasons of results found no reliable strategy: moving often helped a little, meeting the right person early helped a little, and nothing guaranteed anything. The fourth season's ending shows both faces of that. A man wins his reunion on a one-in-five draw of a shell. A woman courted by three men chooses none of them and flies home alone, which the format, for all its engineering, cannot prevent.
