Seven strangers ride a pink van across the world; to confess, you must offer a plane ticket home — Japan's original love-travel format, revived by Netflix.
Ainori follows seven strangers, four men and three women, around the world in a pink van called the Love Wagon. The rule that made it famous is simple: a member who falls in love confesses by offering the other person a plane ticket home to Japan. If the answer is yes, they kiss and fly home together; if not, the ticket comes back, the one who confessed goes home alone, and someone new takes the empty seat. The show also looked at the countries the van passed through and the problems they faced. Fuji TV ran it on Monday nights from October 1999 to March 2009, with Masami Hisamoto and Koji Imada in the studio. It returned on Netflix in 2017 as Ainori Love Wagon: Asian Journey, with the television personality Becky in the studio, and later went to Africa.
The first Asian Journey season, released from October 2017, travelled through Vietnam, Myanmar, Taiwan, Thailand and Malaysia to Singapore. Members confessed and left, and new ones took their seats. In Taiwan, Depparin fell at first sight for Akira, an art student, and confessed on his sixth day in the van. He said it was too soon, and she flew home alone. The first couple came in Thailand, from the last two original members after four countries together: Yu-chan, a dorayaki maker and kickboxer, and Asuka, an aspiring model. Shy Boy, who had gone twenty-eight years without a girlfriend, sang Kasuga a song he had written for her, and she took his ticket. In Singapore the man the others called 'the President', who had come looking for a wife, gave Kanya twenty-one red roses and his ticket; she thanked him and said she had come to care for someone else. The season ended there. Back in Japan, Akira asked the staff to let him see Depparin again, confessed to her on a staged television set, and she said yes. By the second season they had split, and Depparin was back on the Love Wagon.

Why it matters
Ainori turned a confession into the end of a journey. To confess love is to offer someone a ticket home and to risk flying back alone, so courage becomes visible and costly, and every confession ends somebody's trip. Over the original run the Love Wagon visited ninety-two countries; forty-four couples formed, and eight of them married. The format also set its members' private dramas against the countries they passed through and the problems those countries faced, so that falling in love happened alongside other people's hardship. The Netflix revival kept the ticket and added a panel's running commentary for a global audience. Depparin's story shows the format at its most human: turned down on the road, chosen after it, separated within the year, and back in the van, still looking.
