Nina is a journalist with two young daughters, Lena and Zuzia, a handsome house, and a husband, Maciek, to whom she has been married for nine years. The spark has gone. Maciek is wrapped up in his work, leaves the children and the running of the house to her, and is planning a month alone in Iceland. Then the office gives Nina a new assistant: Janek, a much younger man with whom she had a passionate affair ten years earlier. He has come back to Poland after a decade in Amsterdam, and he makes it plain that he still wants her.
Maciek brings his trip forward and goes. When Zuzia falls ill and the first-aid kit turns out to be in Iceland with him, Nina calls Janek, who brings medicine and wins the girls over; her mother, who helps with the children, is angry that she was not called instead. Nina and Janek sleep together, and he tells her he will build a room for her daughters in his flat. Her mother tells her to fall out of love: if she stays, only she gets hurt; if she leaves, everyone does. Her father admits he once faced the same choice, stayed, and is no longer sure he was right. Nina urges Janek to take a job with a rival firm, to put distance between them, but they sleep together again, and Maciek, on a call that was never ended, hears them. In tears, he confronts her over video.
Nina flies to Iceland to talk to him face to face. Maciek, meanwhile, finds a hiker who has fallen into a crevice. Told to wait for the rescuers, he climbs down alone because Nina is on her way, and he falls. She finds him in a coma and tells Janek she is staying. Hurt, Janek comes to her anyway and says he will step back, but will be there if she ever chooses him. Maciek wakes, says he missed her, that he has worked everything out and still loves her. He cannot feel his hand. She tells him it will be all right. In the last scene Nina walks outside alone, the choice still unmade.

Nina’s story

Janek’s story
Ten years after his affair with Nina, and a decade in Amsterdam, Janek comes back to Poland and joins her newsroom as her assistant, making no secret that he still wants her. With her husband away in Iceland and one of her daughters ill, he brings the medicine and wins the girls over. They become lovers again, and he tells her he will build a room for her daughters in his flat. She asks him to take a job with a rival firm, to put distance between them, and they sleep together once more. When she calls from Iceland to say she is staying with her injured husband, he feels betrayed. He follows her there all the same, tells her he will step back, and promises to be there if she ever chooses him.

Maciek’s story

Why it matters
Tonight You're Sleeping with Me starts from a very ordinary kind of marriage: a husband who works, travels and leaves the children to his wife, and a wife who has stopped expecting to be seen. The affair it offers her turns the usual age gap around, with the woman older and the man the one who waits. Its real subject is the reckoning, and her parents give it its terms: her mother's belief that a wife should absorb the cost so that no one else pays it, and her father's doubt, decades later, about having done exactly that. When the husband is injured, the film adds a harder question, what a person owes a partner who now needs care, and declines to answer it. In its first weekend it was the most-watched non-English-language title on Netflix, while Polish reviewers were unsparing.
