Five queer experts spend a week remaking a stranger's life; a four-episode special in 2019 took them to Tokyo, with Kiko Mizuhara as their guide.
Queer Eye, Netflix's 2018 revival of the Bravo makeover show of 2003, sends five experts, the Fab Five, to spend a week with someone nominated by the people around them: Antoni Porowski for food and wine, Tan France for fashion, Jonathan Van Ness for grooming, Karamo Brown for culture and relationships, and Bobby Berk for design, succeeded in the ninth season by Jeremiah Brent. Each week builds to a new look, a remade home and an event the hero dreads or longs for. The series moved from Georgia to Kansas City, Philadelphia, Austin, New Orleans, Las Vegas and Washington, D.C., and ended with its tenth season in January 2026.
The first season was filmed in and around Atlanta. Tom, a divorced 57-year-old nominated by his daughter, prepares for a date at a car show, which goes well. Neal, a programmer who keeps people at a distance, opens up enough to host his app launch. When the police pull the Five over, Karamo and Cory, a former Marine and NASCAR fan, talk about Black Americans and the police. AJ, a gay civil engineer who never came out to his late father, reads his stepmother a letter to him, and she promises to be there for him. Bobby, a father of six with two jobs, finally gets the wedding reception he and his wife never had. Remy, Joe and the firefighter Jeremy, with his firehouse, are remade too.
In 2019 a four-episode special took the Five to Tokyo, guided by the model and actress Kiko Mizuhara. Yoko, a hospice nurse who has given up on being a woman, learns from Karamo that her worth does not rest on marriage or children, and unveils her new look at a party at her new community centre. Kan, a gay man who struggles to live openly, introduces his boyfriend to his family. Kae, a manga artist bullied since childhood, encouraged by the comedian Naomi Watanabe, tells her mother she loves her and exhibits her drawings. Makoto, a shy radio director, talks honestly with his wife and takes her on their first date in years.

Why it matters
Queer Eye turned the makeover show into something closer to care. Five queer experts, gay and non-binary, walk into the homes of people whose lives and politics are often far from theirs, and the series finds its drama in the conversations that follow: about faith, policing, grief, masculinity, coming out. In its first season Karamo and a former Marine talk about Black Americans and the police, and a son reads his stepmother the coming-out letter he wrote to his late father. The Japan special carried the same wager into another culture; Kan later told BuzzFeed Japan that, growing up, the only gay people he saw were entertainers on television. It is fair to ask how much a week can change, and how much of the change is clothes and furniture. What stays is the sight of people, many of them men, being told plainly that they deserve looking after, and believing it for a moment on camera.
