Storyline

An heir tries to end his arrangement with the dominatrix who trained him for the boardroom; one hotel suite, one night.
In a grand hotel suite, Hal Porterfield orders room service, and Rebecca Marin arrives to assess his fitness to run the hotel chain his father built. Her questions turn personal, then humiliating: she is a dominatrix, working from a script Hal has written for her. She has him clean the bathroom in his underwear, then allows him to climax. Over dinner, out of character, he tells her that since his father's death he is about to take over the company, and that their sessions have no place in his new life. He gives her an expensive watch as a parting gift. She leaves, offended.
She comes back. Quoting his father's management book, she tells him he is not fit for the job and demands half his first year's salary, four million dollars, or the recordings she has made of their sessions will go public. Hal pretends not to care, then tears the suite apart looking for a camera while she mocks him, and gives himself an electric shock. On the floor he tells her their arrangement is only a transaction and that he could have her killed. At knifepoint she forces sex on him, telling him a child would bind them for life.
Hal arranges the payment, then stops her at the lift and demands a guarantee that she will not come back for more. She refuses. He drags her back inside, and she shows him footage she has secretly kept. He ties her to the bed and orders her to delete it. Instead she tells him that she has no other clients and feels like herself only in their sessions. He says their safe word, "sanctuary"; she will not stop, because this is no longer a game. When he threatens to kill her and then himself, she proposes a last scene in which she plays his dead father, and leads him to say that he is nothing like his father and does not have to be. They fall asleep holding each other.
In the morning, on his way to the ceremony at which his mother will hand him the company, Hal proposes that Rebecca run it instead, with him at her side. She asks what he will tell his mother. That they are in love, he says. They kiss.

Rebecca plays the scenes Hal writes for her, and plays them well. When he ends their arrangement over dinner with a speech and a watch, she leaves, then storms back in and, quoting his late father's management book, tells him he is unfit to run the company and demands four million dollars for the recordings she has made. She mocks him as he tears the suite apart, and at knifepoint forces sex on him, saying a child would bind them for life. Tied to the bed, she tells him he is her only client, that she feels like herself only in their sessions, and ignores the safe word. Playing his dead father, she leads him to say he is nothing like him. In the morning he asks her to run the company. They kiss.

For months Hal has written the scenes in which Rebecca humiliates him. Now, with his father dead and the company about to be his, he ends them over dinner with a speech and a watch. Faced with blackmail, he feigns indifference, then tears the suite apart for a camera, gives himself an electric shock, and tells her it is only a transaction and he could have her killed. He pays, drags her back from the lift, ties her to the bed, says the safe word and threatens to kill her and then himself. With Rebecca playing his father, he says he is nothing like him and does not have to be. On his way to take over the company, he asks her to run it instead, and says he will tell his mother they are in love.
Why it matters
Sanctuary treats a kink arrangement as what it often is: a contract, with a script, a fee, a safe word and two people who each believe they hold the power. When Hal tries to end it with a watch and a speech, the film asks what a transaction owes the person on the other side of it, and who really controls a relationship in which one person gives orders at the other's request. It is also a film about inheritance. A son who never measured up to his father is about to be handed a company, while a woman with a gift for command has nowhere to use it but a hotel room. The ending turns their power exchange into a business proposal, and leaves open whether that is freedom or simply a new script.
