A college relationship that everyone can see is toxic except the two people inside it.
In 2015 Lucy Albright arrives at a college friend's wedding bracing herself to see Stephen DeMarco again, and the series goes back to explain why. In her first week at Baird College in upstate New York, Lucy meets Stephen, a charming older student, and falls into a relationship that everyone around her can see is bad for her. He is still entangled with his ex-girlfriend Diana; he lies about where he has been; he makes Lucy doubt what she sees. That same week her roommate, Macy, is killed in a car crash after a party.
Lucy discovers that Stephen was once involved with Macy and never told her. Confronted, he offers a partial, self-serving confession about the night Macy died that wins back her trust. Protecting him, Lucy sends an anonymous letter that points the college at Drew, the brother of Stephen's friend Wrigley, and a fight between the brothers ends Wrigley's football career. Lucy and Stephen say they love each other. The first season's last episode shows what really happened: Stephen was driving drunk with Macy beside him, and after the crash he left her and staged the scene to make her look responsible. Then, at a party, he walks off hand in hand with Diana without a word, and the heartbroken Lucy sleeps with Evan, her best friend Bree's boyfriend. In 2015, Stephen is engaged to Lucy's childhood friend Lydia.
In the second season Lucy tries to live without Stephen. She dates Leo; she tells Diana that Stephen let Macy die; she claims, falsely and publicly, that Lydia's brother Chris, already accused of rape by another student, assaulted her too, to make him answer for what she believes he did to her friend Pippa. Bree has an affair with her professor, Oliver. Diana finds evidence on Stephen's laptop that Lucy's story is true, and deletes it. In the finale Lucy sleeps with Stephen, then goes back to Leo, and Stephen provokes Leo into beating him. Bree learns that Oliver's wife knew about the affair all along. Drew, just reconciled with Wrigley, dies of an accidental overdose of Wrigley's painkillers. Evan confesses to Stephen that he slept with Lucy, and Stephen records it. In 2015, after her boyfriend Max leaves her, Lucy sleeps with Stephen again; then, just before Bree walks down the aisle to marry Evan, Stephen sends her the recording. A third and final season followed in 2026.

Lucy arrives at Baird and falls for Stephen in her first week, the week her roommate, Macy, dies in a car crash. Learning that Stephen was once involved with Macy, she accepts his partial confession and starts protecting him, sending the anonymous letter that points the college at Drew. They say they love each other; then Stephen walks off with Diana, and Lucy sleeps with Evan, her best friend Bree's boyfriend. The next year she dates Leo, tells Diana that Stephen let Macy die, and publicly and falsely accuses Chris, already accused of rape, of assaulting her too, to punish him for what she believes he did to Pippa. She sleeps with Stephen, then goes back to Leo. In 2015, the weekend of Bree's wedding, Max leaves her and she sleeps with Stephen again.

Stephen sleeps with Macy on the day she moves in, then flirts with Lucy in front of her. After a party, driving drunk with Macy beside him, he crashes; she is killed, and he leaves her and stages the scene to make it look like her fault. He keeps Lucy close with half-truths, wins her back with a partial confession, and manipulates Drew and Wrigley. After he and Lucy say they love each other, he walks off with Diana. The next year he leaves Lucy a menacing voicemail that drives his sister away, tells Lucy he still loves her, and breaks up with Diana. He goads Leo into beating him and records Evan confessing that he slept with Lucy. In 2015, engaged to Lucy's childhood friend Lydia, he sends the recording to Bree before she walks down the aisle.

Bree’s story
Bree listens while Lucy talks of nothing but Stephen. At Evan's lake-house birthday she and Evan get together, and Stephen spitefully breaks her camera. The next year Evan admits he has cheated on her, without saying it was with Lucy, and Bree turns to her married professor, Oliver. She begins an affair with him and confides it only to Lucy. When she asks for more, he ends it; she goes back offering him something purely physical, and his wife walks in and reveals that they have an open marriage and planned the whole affair. With Lucy and Pippa, Bree wrecks Oliver's car. In 2015 she is about to marry Evan, and just before she walks down the aisle, Stephen sends her the recording of Evan confessing that he slept with Lucy.

Why it matters
Tell Me Lies studies a manipulative relationship from the inside, and it refuses to make its heroine a simple victim. Stephen lies, isolates and rewrites events until Lucy doubts what she saw, and the series shows how that can feel like intensity, even like love, to a first-year student far from home. Lucy, in turn, learns his methods and uses them, most painfully when she makes a false accusation of sexual assault to punish a man others have accused. Around them the show sets the ordinary damage of college life: grief kept secret, a professor sleeping with his student, a brother's death. Its showrunner, Meaghan Oppenheimer, has said she hopes it leaves audiences better prepared to deal with the Stephens of the world and to recognise the red flags. The harder question it asks is why a person keeps going back to someone she knows is lying to her.
