Two Delhi wedding planners; each episode a marriage, each marriage a negotiation over caste, money, dowry or a closet.
Tara Khanna and Karan Mehra run Made in Heaven, a wedding-planning agency in south Delhi. Tara grew up lower-middle-class and married Adil Khanna, heir to an industrial fortune; Karan is gay, closeted, and still paying off the loan shark who bankrolled the business. Each episode is one wedding, and behind each lies a bargain: a groom's family that has the bride's past investigated, parents who demand a dowry on the wedding day, a political match the planners help a bride escape.
In the first season Tara learns that Adil is having an affair with her best friend, Faiza. Karan's landlord secretly films him with a man; Karan is arrested, sexually assaulted by a policeman in custody, and resolves to challenge Section 377, the colonial-era law against gay sex. A flashback reveals how Tara won Adil: she arranged for the two of them to be recorded having sex in his office and leaked the footage to end his engagement. The season ends with Tara walking out of the mansion to find their office wrecked by a right-wing mob. She and Karan laugh, and plan to start over with the jewellery she has taken.
The second season opens six months on. The agency is struggling; Ramesh Jauhari, the former loan shark, is now a partner, his wife Bulbul audits the books, and Meher, a trans woman, runs production. Tara and Adil are waiting out their divorce, and Faiza is pregnant with his child. The weddings include a bride assaulted by her fiancé who marries him anyway, a Dalit professor who faces down her in-laws' prejudice and marries in a Buddhist ceremony, and a polygamist's second wedding, at which his first wife tries to take her own life and then resolves to fight to have polygamy outlawed. Bulbul tells her son that she killed her abusive first husband to save the boy's life. Karan's mother, dying of cancer, will not accept him; he turns to drugs and gambling, takes money from the business and falls out with Tara before his mother dies.
Tara seduces Adil, then threatens to take his house, and in the finale the Khanna mansion is hers in the settlement. Raghav, the chef she has been seeing, will not live in a house taken from a widow, and leaves. Meher's boyfriend, Danish, stays with her in spite of his family. Adil and Faiza marry. The series ends with Tara and Karan together in the mansion.

Tara Khanna’s story
Tara grew up lower-middle-class and now lives in the Khanna mansion, running a wedding agency she does not need for the money. She confides her suspicions about Adil to her best friend, Faiza, who is the other woman; when a car crash exposes them, Tara gives Faiza blood, then wrecks her house. A flashback shows how she got in: she had herself and Adil filmed having sex in his office and leaked the tape to end his engagement. She walks out with her jewellery and laughs with Karan in their wrecked office. In the second season, seeing a chef, Raghav, she seduces Adil, then tells him she wants his house, and takes it from his widowed mother, who says she will never forgive her. Raghav will not live there. Tara ends in the mansion with Karan.

Tara's business partner, a closeted gay man in debt, who is arrested, assaulted in custody and decides to fight the law.
Karan Mehra’s story
Karan runs the agency on money from a loan shark, Ramesh Jauhari, and hides that he is gay. His landlord secretly films him with a man; he is arrested, and in custody a policeman sexually assaults him. When the landlord confesses that he too is gay, Karan drops his case against him and resolves to challenge Section 377 instead. Reunited with Nawab, the schoolboy he once led a homophobic attack on, he apologises, and they spend a night together. In the second season his mother, dying of cancer, tells him not to come back when he refuses to marry a woman. He turns to drugs and gambling, takes money from the business, falls out with Tara and loses his boyfriend, Akshay, over his lies. His mother dies without accepting him, and he ends beside Tara in the Khanna mansion.

Why it matters
Made in Heaven uses the most photographed ritual in Indian life, the big wedding, as a way into everything the photographs leave out: dowry, colourism, caste, domestic violence, polygamy, the policing of a bride's past. Its two planners are compromised themselves. Tara climbed into money by a calculated scandal and fights to keep it; Karan hides who he is from the families who hire him, until the law treats him as a criminal for it. The first season closes on a card noting that Section 377 was later struck down as unconstitutional, and the second gave a leading role to a trans woman, played by Trinetra Haldar Gummaraju, who had documented her own transition in public. What the series keeps asking is what a marriage is for, when so many of the ones it stages are contracts, alliances or escapes.
