A teen sleeps with a stranger who becomes his stepsister, while loving his teacher who becomes the other stepsister.
Natsuo Fujii, a seventeen-year-old high-school student who secretly writes fiction, is in love with his English teacher, Hina Tachibana, who has been his confidante since they met on the school roof. Trying to get over her, he goes on a group date, where a quiet girl, Rui, slips away with him, takes him home and asks him to sleep with her. Neither is in love; he agrees. Days later his widowed father announces that he is remarrying, and the bride arrives with her two daughters: Hina and Rui. The four move into one house, and Rui transfers to Natsuo's school, where the two of them pretend to be strangers.
Natsuo learns that Hina is having an affair with Shu, a married researcher, and he and Rui push her into ending it. When he tells Hina he loves her, she answers that for the two of them to be together would be like dying together. The story widens to Momo Kashiwabara, a classmate with a reputation for boys and a past suicide attempt, whom Natsuo, seeing how lonely she is, declines to sleep with; and to the literature club, run by the shy Miu Ashihara and supervised by Reiji Kiriya, a teacher who turns out to be Natsuo's favourite novelist.
Rui, who has fallen for Natsuo, kisses him, and Hina, who has been falling for him too, moves out, leaving him a key to her flat. There she and her student begin a secret relationship, and Natsuo lies to Rui about where he goes. Rui finds them together, then makes peace with her sister. On the school trip to Okinawa, Natsuo gives Hina a ring and asks her to marry him one day, and she sleeps with him: a teacher's sexual relationship with her seventeen-year-old pupil, which the series tells as romance and which is abuse of her position. A photograph of them kissing at the hotel window reaches the principal.
In the final episode Hina leaves the school and cannot be reached. A letter explains that she asked to be transferred far away in exchange for the school's silence, to protect Natsuo and let him move on. He sinks into depression, then writes a new novel, which Kiriya enters in a competition; it wins first prize. Coming home, he mistakes Rui in a wig for Hina and tells her the truth, and Rui kisses him and says she will not hold back any more. Somewhere else, Hina, her hair cut short, smiles. The twelve episodes cover the first eight of the manga's twenty-eight volumes and end with nothing resolved between the three.

Rui Tachibana’s story
Rui, raised by her mother, is blunt and solitary when she slips away from a group date with Natsuo and asks him to sleep with her; neither is in love. Days later he is her stepbrother, and at his school they pretend to be strangers while he helps her make friends. She helps him break up Hina's affair, befriends Momo and joins the literature club. Slowly she falls for him and tells her sister so. When he lies about where he goes, she reads his novel, understands that he loves Hina and finds them together. She shuts them out, then makes peace with her sister. After Hina leaves, Rui puts on a wig; mistaking her for Hina, Natsuo tells her everything, and she kisses him and says she will not hold back any more.

Why it matters
Domestic Girlfriend is a melodrama made of taboos, and its manga, unusually for a boys' magazine, put 'immoral' material at its centre: sex between teenagers who do not love each other, adultery, and a teacher who falls for her pupil. The series plays that last relationship as doomed romance, a love the characters compare to dying together. It should be named more plainly. Hina is an adult with authority over Natsuo, he is seventeen, and her sexual relationship with him is abuse of that position, whatever either of them feels. The school in the story treats it as a scandal to be hushed up, and it is Hina who pays with her post. What the series does see clearly is the loneliness under everything: a boy raised by a widowed father, two sisters whose father left, and a house suddenly full of people who cannot say what they want.
