A hina-doll craftsman's grandson sews cosplay for a gyaru who loves adult games — craft as intimacy.
Wakana Gojo, a first-year high-school student, lives with his grandfather above the family's hina doll workshop in Iwatsuki and wants to become a kashira-shi, a craftsman who makes the dolls' heads. When he was small, a friend told him it was creepy for a boy to love dolls, and he has kept to himself ever since. When his sewing machine breaks he borrows the one in the school sewing room, and there Marin Kitagawa, the most popular girl in his class, finds him. She does not laugh. She is thrilled, and asks him to make her a costume of Shizuku, the heroine of an erotic video game she adores. Marin loves anime and games and has never hidden it; what she cannot do is sew.
Wakana makes the costume against a deadline while his grandfather is in hospital after a fall. On the train home from her first cosplay event, half asleep, he tells Marin she looked beautiful, a word he uses only when he means it, and she falls for him. He does not notice. His work brings a commission from Juju, Sajuna Inui, a well-known cosplayer who looks far younger than her age, and he quietly makes a costume for her tall, shy younger sister Shinju, who takes Juju's photographs and has never dared to dress up herself. The first season ends after a summer festival, with Marin telling Wakana on the phone that she loves him, after he has fallen asleep.
The second season runs from Halloween into winter. Marin wins the school festival's cross-dressing pageant in a host's suit that Wakana finishes only because his classmates pitch in, and for the first time he lets others help. They befriend Amane Himeno, a young man who found his confidence in crossplay, and Akira Ogata, a prop maker whose parents made her give up anime as a girl. After a misunderstanding on a night Wakana is stranded at her apartment by a halted train service, Marin resolves to tell him how she feels. The series ends with a group shoot of characters from a horror game: Juju, who hid her fear of horror for her sister's sake, faints; Akira, who seemed to avoid Marin, turns out to worship her; and Marin and Wakana go home together, still not a couple. The manga, which ended in 2025, goes on to bring them together; the anime stops before that.

Wakana Gojo’s story
All Wakana wants is to make dolls' heads like his grandfather, and since a girl he played with called his love of hina dolls creepy, he has had no friends. He treats Marin's costume as seriously as a doll's: he plays her games for research, drafts the patterns and finishes it against a deadline while his grandfather is in hospital. On the train home he tells her she looked beautiful, a word he keeps for when he means it, and never notices what it does to her. He quietly makes a costume for Juju's sister, Shinju, who wanted to dress up too. In the second season, overloaded with Marin's pageant costume, he lets his classmates help and stops being alone in class. The series leaves him walking home with Marin, still not her boyfriend.

Marin Kitagawa’s story
Marin's mother died when she was small and her father works away, and she lives alone. She hides none of her tastes but cannot sew, so she begs Wakana to make her Shizuku costume. After her first event, half asleep on the train, he tells her she was beautiful; knowing he says it only when he means it, she falls for him. He does not notice. She takes him to places he never went as a child and tells him she loves him on the phone once he has fallen asleep. In the second season she wins the school's cross-dressing pageant in a suit he makes, and after a misunderstanding on a night he is stranded at her flat, she resolves to confess. At the end they go home together, still not a couple.

Why it matters
My Dress-Up Darling is about shame and what dissolves it. Wakana has hidden the thing he loves since a friend told him dolls were not for boys; Marin has never hidden anything, not even her love of erotic games. The series keeps widening the circle: a young man who found himself in crossplay and lost a girlfriend over it, a woman whose parents made her give up anime, a small older girl who dreads looking childish. Its argument is that being taken seriously in what one loves, by a single person, can change a life. One Anime News Network reviewer noted that its overt fan service divides opinion; another praised it because Marin does not rescue Wakana but the two help each other towards their dreams, and for its view that the partner worth finding respects a passion without necessarily sharing it.
