A novelist forced into a thousand marriage-hunting encounters, most of them terrible.
At the end of 2023 Ayako Minami, a struggling novelist in her thirties who writes erotic fiction, tells her handsome younger boyfriend, Yamada, that she dreams of going to a hot spring with a lover, and he promises to make it happen. Then he stops answering, and she crowns him Scumbag of the Year. In the new year he appears in her living room as a ghost. A woman killed him, and unless he keeps a promise and passes on within a year, he will turn into an insect. So he appoints himself her coach in marriage-hunting.
The thousand knocks begin. At a bread-tasting mixer a younger man turns out to be collecting partners by age bracket; a kind man fails to stir her; a hot-blooded Latin dancer proves to be a marriage swindler. Takashi Oike, nicknamed Koike, heir to a vast trading company, likes her, but his mother wants her to give up her work, so Ayako walks out eating prawns with her fingers, and Koike, inspired, leaves home for a small design job. A confectioner's apprentice proposes; wanting a freer life, she says no. Her rival, the bestselling novelist Rin Kyumoto, has a ghost of her own, a father who wrecks her dates.
Worn out, Ayako asks Yamada to stay with her, ghost or not, and they drift into a pretend romance. He pushes her back onto the apps; she meets a smooth liar and, with her serial's magazine folding, almost settles for giving up, until Yamada explodes: she is not afraid of men, he says, but of hoping for herself. She tells him she loves him. But he has been visiting the woman who killed him in prison, and when he keeps his promise to her, to stay until morning, he fades away. He comes back, worried about Ayako, and helps stage a fake engagement between Rin and Koike so that Rin's father can pass on; Rin's real suitor bursts in to declare his love; they marry, and her father passes on.
At a matchmaking event in a small Shizuoka town, when local men harass Ayako, Koike throws off his wig to turn the jeering on himself, and she realises she loves him. A sweet rival turns out to be a spy sent by his mother; Ayako chases their bus on a bicycle, and Koike tells his mother he is happy with his small life. Ayako confesses; after a few anxious days he says he loves her too, and they go for ramen hand in hand. Marriage can wait. On a hot-spring trip she tells Yamada she will never forget him, and as she and Koike sit in the open-air bath, he vanishes like steam.

Ayako has always chosen men by their looks, and Yamada, the ex she crowned Scumbag of the Year, becomes her coach. She turns down a man who collects women by age and walks out on Koike's mother's demand that she give up her work. She agrees to date a confectioner's apprentice, then turns down his proposal, wanting to stay free. She asks Yamada to stay, ghost or not, and tells him she loves him; he fades away. When Koike throws off his wig to draw the jeering from her, she chases his bus on a bicycle to tell him she loves him, and days later he says it back. Marriage can wait. Yamada’s story
Yamada promised Ayako a hot-spring trip and stopped answering. Now a ghost, he will turn into an insect unless he keeps a promise within a year, so he sets out to find her a man, working the dating apps on her phone behind her back. When she asks him to stay, he plays her pretend boyfriend, then shouts at her for giving up: what she fears, he says, is hoping for herself. All along he has been visiting the woman who killed him, now in prison, and when he keeps his promise to stay with her until morning, he fades away, telling Ayako to live. He comes back, too worried about her to go, uncovers the spy Koike's mother has planted and pushes Ayako towards Koike. As she sits in the hot spring with Koike, he vanishes like steam.

Koike's doting mother has decided every part of his life. He likes Ayako and reads her novels, and when his mother demands that she give up her work and Ayako walks out eating prawns with her fingers, he eats them with his fingers too. Then he leaves home, takes a job at a small design firm and tells Ayako that a free life beats one pressed into a mould. At a country matchmaking event, when local men jeer at Ayako, he throws off his wig and turns the joke on his own bald head. He sees through the woman his mother sends, and tells his mother he is happy with his small life. When Ayako tells him she loves him, he asks for a few days, then says it back, and they go for ramen hand in hand.

Why it matters
Konkatsu, the business of marriage-hunting through parties, apps and agencies, gives this comedy its thousand knocks, and it is frank about what a single woman in her thirties meets there: men who sort women by age, a swindler, a married man lying about everything, and her own habit of choosing by looks. It is adapted from a novel by Ayako Minami, whose heroine carries the author's own name. The ghost is the joke that carries the grief. Yamada is the man who treated her worst and knows her best, and the series lets her love him and then let him go. Its ending is quietly pointed: she finds a man who likes her as she is and decides that marriage can wait. It was the first leading role for the comedian Maki Fukuda, and its first episode drew a million catch-up views in two days.
