A university plastic surgeon, forced out of her hospital, joins a celebrated cosmetic clinic, meaning to expose an industry that sells confidence by the scalpel.
Fumi Numata is a plastic surgeon at a university hospital, brilliant in theatre and openly contemptuous of cosmetic surgery. One night the influencer Kanabun is rushed in after having Botox while still recovering from a breast augmentation. Beneath the implants lies a malignant tumour, and Fumi removes them to save her life. In despair at losing her breasts, the young woman takes her own life. The augmentation was done by Rin Tohyama, the celebrated director of the Tohyama clinic, and the clinic steers the blame onto Fumi online. Out of work, her family in debt, Fumi takes a job with Rin, meaning to expose the clinic from inside.
Each episode brings someone who wants a new face. Yoshiko Tanaka, a voice-acting student told not even to audition because roles go to pretty faces, has surgery and wins a part; when a blow to the nose damages her implant, she says she would rather die than go back to her old face, and Rin rebuilds it. Yuriko, an elderly woman dying of cancer, insists on a facelift in front of a television crew; Fumi performs it, and Yuriko goes to have her funeral portrait taken. Moeno, a primary-school child who streams videos, wants her surgery filmed for her channel, and Rin refuses her.
Rin has a secret: since an operation of hers blinded a patient, her hands shake in any major surgery, and others operate in her place. Her father, Arata, the clinic's founder, still rules it. Fumi's mother, Taeko, who runs a snack bar, dies after a brain haemorrhage, leaving signs of a past Fumi never knew. Fumi makes Rin's shaking hands public and quits when Rin learns who did it, then returns to help her operate on the Tokyo governor, and the two women turn against Arata together. Fumi learns that Arata is her biological father and that Rin is his adopted daughter. She tells Rin she is leaving cosmetic surgery, and on the way to the sea she is badly hurt in a car crash.
She survives, but her face may never be the same. Arata asks her to carry on his blood and his 'hand of God'; her condition is that he give up the Tohyama name. Fumi asks Rin to rebuild her face. Rin, who is closing the clinic and leaving for Florida, refuses, then hears the operation is starting and goes to the hospital to perform it. Time passes. Fumi has turned her mother's snack bar into a clinic of her own. Rin walks in, and it emerges that it was she who rebuilt Fumi's face. She offers to buy the clinic for 200 million yen. Fumi smiles. Her answer is not shown.

Fumi Numata’s story
Fumi believes surgery exists to keep people alive and says she cannot cut into anyone who is not ill. When Kanabun's death puts her name online, she resigns rather than take the blame, and with her family in debt she joins Rin's clinic to prove it knew about the tumour. A dying patient tells her she looks down on them, and when her brother hurts himself trying to make his own double eyelids, she asks why before operating. She exposes Rin's shaking hands and loses her job, then returns to operate beside her. Learning that Arata is her father, she tells Rin she is leaving cosmetic surgery, and is badly hurt in a crash. She asks Rin to rebuild her face. Later, in a clinic of her own, she smiles at Rin's offer to buy it.

Rin Tohyama’s story
Rin is Arata's adopted daughter, whom he presented on stage, when she was a child, as heir to his 'hand of God'. The tremor began when an operation of hers blinded the granddaughter of the clinic's patron; others now operate in her place, and she cannot refuse the young woman anything. She pins Kanabun's death on Fumi, then hires her. When Fumi exposes her tremor and her father returns to practice against her, Rin gives Fumi the records of both operations, admits before the press the clinic's part in Kanabun's death, ends her arrangement with the blinded patient and closes the clinic. She refuses Fumi's request to rebuild her face, then, about to leave for Florida, turns back to operate. Two years later she walks into Fumi's clinic and offers 200 million yen for it.

Why it matters
Netflix introduced Plastic Beauty by pointing at a contradiction: Japan now calls lookism a harm and praises diverse beauty, while the cosmetic surgery boom keeps growing. The series, built from research into that industry, puts its practices on screen: the influencer patient, the dying woman filmed for television, the child who wants surgery for her channel, the doctor whose name is worth more than her hands. It does not settle the argument between its two surgeons. Fumi believes medicine exists to keep people alive; Rin believes a face can be what keeps someone alive. Underneath runs a second story about inheritance, two daughters, one adopted and one by blood, whom the same father wants as vessels for his name. By the end Fumi is the patient, afraid of losing the face she knows, and the question in the series' own tagline stays open: is wanting to be beautiful a hope, or a curse?
