A Brooklyn stripper marries a Russian oligarch's son; the Palme d'Or and Best Picture for a screwball about labour.
Anora Mikheeva, who goes by Ani, is a twenty-three-year-old stripper living in Brighton Beach, the Russian-speaking corner of Brooklyn. Her boss sends her to a customer who wants a dancer with Russian: Ivan Zakharov, called Vanya, the twenty-one-year-old son of an oligarch, nominally in America to study and in practice partying, getting high and playing video games in his parents' mansion. He pays her for sex, then pays her 15,000 dollars to be his girlfriend for a week. The week ends in Las Vegas, where Vanya, due to be sent home to work for his father, proposes on impulse: married to an American, he will not have to go. Ani hesitates, believes him, and they marry in a chapel. She quits the club and moves into the mansion with a large ring and a fur coat.
In Russia, his mother, Galina, orders Vanya's Armenian godfather, Toros, to have the marriage annulled before she and her husband arrive. Toros's men, Garnik and Igor, come to the house. Vanya runs. Ani fights them until they tie her up. Toros takes her ring and offers her 10,000 dollars to agree. She insists they are in love, but she helps them search Brooklyn through the night, and they find Vanya drunk at her old club with a rival dancer. A New York court cannot annul a Nevada wedding, so the parents fly everyone back to Las Vegas.
Vanya tells Ani coldly that it is over. She says she will fight for a divorce settlement; Galina threatens ruin for her and her family, and Ani signs. Igor, the quietest of the men, suggests Vanya apologise, and Galina forbids it. Ani tells Galina that her son married only to spite her. Igor drives Ani back to New York to collect her things, and she accuses him of assaulting her in the struggle. The next morning, in the car outside her home, he hands over the promised money and gives back her ring. She starts to have sex with him, stops when he tries to kiss her, and breaks down sobbing against him.

Ani is twenty-three and dances at a strip club. Vanya pays her for sex, then for a week as his girlfriend, and in Las Vegas asks her to marry him. She hesitates, believes him, and says yes, then quits the club and moves into his parents' mansion. When Toros's men arrive and Vanya runs, she fights them until she is tied up, insists that they are in love, and helps hunt for him through the night. When his parents arrive he tells her coldly that it is over; in Las Vegas his mother threatens her family, and she signs, telling Galina that her son married only to spite her. Igor drives her home and gives back her ring. She starts to have sex with him, stops when he tries to kiss her, and sobs in his arms.

Vanya is supposed to be studying in New York; he spends his days partying, getting high and playing video games in his parents' mansion. He asks for a dancer who speaks Russian, pays Ani for sex, then pays her to be his girlfriend for a week. In Las Vegas, told he must go home to work at his father's company, he proposes on impulse and buys her a ring and a fur coat. When Toros's men arrive he runs, leaving Ani to fight them, and is found drunk at her old club. Once his parents land he gives in at once, tells Ani coldly that the marriage is over, and says nothing while his mother threatens her. When Igor suggests he apologise, Galina objects, and he goes back to Russia with his family.

Igor’s story
Igor is one of the two men Toros sends to the mansion. When Vanya runs and Ani fights, he and Garnik restrain her, and he spends the night searching Brooklyn with her. In Las Vegas, after she signs, he suggests that Vanya apologise to her; Galina refuses. He drives Ani back to New York, where she accuses him of assaulting her in the struggle and says he would have raped her had they been alone. He tells her he had no such intention, and that he prefers her real name, Anora. In the morning he hands over the money she was promised and gives back the ring Toros took. She starts to have sex with him; when he tries to kiss her she stops, and he holds her while she sobs.

Why it matters
Anora treats sex work as work. Ani is good at her job and clear about what a client is paying for, and the film's comedy comes from the week in which she believes that love and a marriage licence have bought her out of that economy. Its grief comes from how quickly money shows her otherwise. A family rich enough can undo a wedding, take back a ring and set a price on her consent, and the husband who chose her will not say a word for her. The film won the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 2024 and five Academy Awards, among them Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actress for Mikey Madison, one of only four films to win both the Palme d'Or and Best Picture. Its last scene asks something the comedy held back: what gentleness means to a woman who has learned that so much of it comes with a price.
