Strangers marry at the altar, live as a couple for several weeks, then decide whether to stay married.
Married at First Sight, adapted from the Danish series Gift ved første blik, began on the cable channel FYI in July 2014, moved to Lifetime in 2017 and to Peacock in 2025. Relationship experts match strangers who agree to marry the first time they meet. The weddings are legal. After a honeymoon the couples live together for several weeks, then each must decide whether to stay married or divorce.
The first season, set in New York City and northern New Jersey, matched three couples. Its experts were the clinical psychologist Joseph Cilona, the sexologist Logan Levkoff, the sociologist Pepper Schwartz and the humanist chaplain Greg Epstein. Jamie Otis, a 27-year-old nurse, had been a contestant on The Bachelor, which made the experts hesitate before choosing her; she married Doug Hehner, a 31-year-old software salesman. Cortney Hendrix, a 26-year-old make-up artist, married Jason Carrion, a 27-year-old emergency medical technician. Monet Bell, a 33-year-old product development manager, married Vaughn Copeland, a 30-year-old field service technician.
At the altar Jamie felt nothing for Doug and panicked at the reception; he gave her time, and they did not sleep together during the experiment. After a week's honeymoon the couples shared cramped apartments for four weeks. Jason and Cortney watched each other perform, he as a wrestler, she in burlesque, but he kept his guard up and had not introduced her to his ailing mother. Jamie showed Doug the trailer park where she grew up, then caught him lying about a cigarette. Monet and Vaughn made a late breakthrough.
When the weeks were up, Jamie and Doug and Cortney and Jason chose to stay married; Monet and Vaughn did not, and divorced. Cortney and Jason stayed together for five years and divorced in 2019. Jamie and Doug are still married. They went on to a spin-off and now have four children. By the tally kept on the show's Wikipedia page, of the 79 couples matched in its first nineteen seasons, 44 chose to stay married on Decision Day, and at the end of 2025 eleven were still married.

Why it matters
Married at First Sight turns the oldest form of matchmaking, the arranged marriage, into a televised experiment, and asks whether experts can choose better than desire does. Its first season gave every possible answer at once: a couple still married more than a decade later, a marriage that lasted five years, and one that ended when the weeks were up. The format puts consent under unusual pressure. People legally marry a stranger on camera, then must work out, with the cameras still there, whether intimacy has grown or is only being performed. The franchise's own record is sobering: by Wikipedia's count, eleven of 79 matched couples were still married at the end of 2025. What the show captures best is not the science of matching but the ordinary, unglamorous work of two people learning to live together, done in public.
