A WWII nurse falls through time to 1743 Scotland; its wedding-night episode is a case study in whose pleasure a scene is shot for.
In 1945 Claire Randall, a British combat nurse, is in the Highlands with her husband, Frank, a historian, rebuilding their marriage after the war, when she touches a standing stone at Craigh na Dun and wakes in 1743. Frank's ancestor, Captain Jonathan "Black Jack" Randall, suspects her of spying, and to shelter her the MacKenzie clan marries her to a young Highlander with a price on his head, Jamie Fraser. They fall in love. Claire survives a witch trial, chooses Jamie over the stones, and at the end of the first season frees him from Wentworth Prison, where Randall has raped him.
In Paris, in the second season, they fail to stop the Jacobite rising that Claire knows will end in slaughter, and their daughter, Faith, is stillborn. Before Culloden Jamie sends Claire, pregnant again, back through the stones, and Frank agrees to raise the child as his own. Twenty years later, widowed, Claire brings their daughter, Brianna, to Scotland, learns with the help of a young historian, Roger Wakefield, that Jamie survived, and in the third season goes back to him: a printer and smuggler in Edinburgh, with an illegitimate son, William, and a new wife. A voyage to the Caribbean ends in shipwreck off Georgia.
From the fourth season they build a home, Fraser's Ridge, in the mountains of North Carolina. Brianna follows them through the stones and Roger follows her; Brianna is raped by the pirate Stephen Bonnet and gives birth to a son. In the fifth season Jamie's godfather, Murtagh, is killed fighting the Crown, and Claire is abducted and raped by Lionel Brown and his men before Jamie rescues her. The sixth and seventh seasons bring the Revolution to the Ridge: Claire is falsely accused of murder and saved from the gallows, Brianna and Roger take their children back to the twentieth century to save their baby daughter's life, and Jamie fights at Saratoga with his son William in the opposing army.
In the eighth and final season, broadcast in 2026, Brianna's family returns to the Ridge with a book Frank wrote, which records that Jamie will die at the Battle of Kings Mountain. Claire and Jamie learn that Faith did not die after all; the orphan Fanny who lives with them is her daughter. Jamie makes peace with William and goes to the battle anyway. He is killed there and dies in Claire's arms. An epilogue reveals his ghost as the Highlander who watched Claire through a window in the very first episode. Then the story returns to Kings Mountain: Claire's hair has turned white, and she and Jamie open their eyes and breathe. Where, or when, they wake is left unsaid.

On Fraser's Ridge she is abducted and raped by Lionel Brown's men, is saved from the gallows after a false murder charge, marries Lord John when Jamie is reported drowned, and is shot at Monmouth. She learns that the orphan Fanny is Faith's daughter. At Kings Mountain Jamie dies in her arms; her hair turns white, and they open their eyes, where or when unsaid.

Jamie is an outlaw, once flogged by Black Jack Randall, when he marries Claire to keep her from Randall. In Wentworth prison Randall rapes him after Jamie trades himself for Claire's freedom, and afterwards, when he wants to die, Claire talks him back. Before Culloden he sends her home. He survives, hides for years, befriends Lord John Grey in prison and fathers a son, William, when an heiress blackmails him into sex. Claire finds him twenty years on, a printer and smuggler in Edinburgh with a second wife. In America he builds Fraser's Ridge, loses Murtagh, fights at Saratoga and makes peace with William. Knowing from Frank's book that he will die at Kings Mountain, he goes, and dies in Claire's arms. Then he and Claire open their eyes.

Brianna Randall Fraser MacKenzie’s story
Brianna is twenty when she learns that Frank was not her father, and believes her mother's story only when she sees a woman vanish into the stones. She sends Claire back to Jamie; learning that her parents will die in a fire, she goes through the stones to warn them. In Wilmington she and Roger handfast, and the pirate Stephen Bonnet rapes her when she tries to recover her mother's ring. Pregnant, she finds her parents, forgives Bonnet in his cell, and has a son, Jemmy, then marries Roger. For their daughter Mandy's heart, they take the children back to the twentieth century, where Rob Cameron, after Jacobite gold, takes Jemmy. She follows Roger into the past, returns to the Ridge pregnant again with Frank's book, and builds a rifle for the battle in which her father dies.

Why it matters
Outlander is a historical romance told from the woman's side. Its heroine is a combat nurse with a modern sense of her own body, dropped into a century that treats women as property, and the series is frank about her pleasure and about what that century does to people. When it began in 2014, the Starz chief executive said its mix of romance and a feminist focus would set it apart, and a Guardian critic praised its rare acknowledgment of the female gaze in its sex scenes. It is also, more uncomfortably, a series that returns again and again to sexual violence, against Jamie, Brianna and Claire, and asks each time how a person and a marriage live on afterwards. Across eight seasons and three centuries its constant question is what a person would give up for a love that history keeps trying to end. Its last scene answers: almost everything, even death.
