A suburban mother keeps a journal of her wild ex; her husband reads it. The episode-three shower scene became a meme.
Billie Connelly gave up a psychology doctorate at Columbia and a wild life in Manhattan for a house in suburban Connecticut, two small children and a kind, steady husband, Cooper, an investment banker. Their sex life has dwindled, and Billie cannot stop thinking about Brad, the record producer she loved in her twenties. She writes it all down on her laptop in explicit detail. Cooper finds the journal. It sets off the best sex they have had in years, then jealousy: he follows Brad to the gym, tries to copy what he has read, and feels he cannot measure up. Billie learns that her best friend, Sasha, has been sleeping with Brad, and Brad tells Billie he still loves her.
Flashbacks tell the story of Billie and Brad: the obsession, his cruelty and his damaged family, the pregnancy she lost, and the break-up after which she chose Cooper for his stability. In the present Cooper is tempted by his boss, Francesca. At a suburban sex party, when Billie refuses to have sex in front of the guests, he lets their neighbour Trina perform oral sex on him while Billie watches in tears, then beats up Trina's husband, Devon, for propositioning Billie. Brad proposes to Billie, and she turns him down. She and Cooper try to rebuild, and she goes back to her doctorate. But watching her son's school play she realises it is not enough, and the first season ends with Billie running across New York to Brad's door, telling him she is not leaving her husband.
The second season opens there, and Brad pulls back: he has a new girlfriend, Gigi, a model, who is pregnant. Billie and Cooper divorce. Cooper goes on a binge of sex and drink with Devon that ends when he crashes a car while drunk; he gets sober and plans to propose to Emily, an old girlfriend. Billie dates a restaurateur, Majid, until the day he loses track of her son, Hudson, and Brad is the one who knows where to find the boy. Sasha is reunited with Kam, the man she once refused to follow. Billie finishes her doctorate. At Sasha's wedding Brad tells Billie that he and Gigi have split and that it was always her. The series ends with Billie walking barefoot down an aisle on the beach to marry Brad, and telling him she is pregnant.

She learns that her best friend, Sasha, has been sleeping with Brad, and turns down Brad's proposal. At a sex party she refuses to perform before the guests and watches in tears as Cooper lets their neighbour Trina perform a sex act on him. She returns to her doctorate and her marriage until, at her son's school play, she knows it is not enough, and runs to Brad's door. He has a pregnant girlfriend. Billie divorces, leaves Majid when he loses track of her son, finishes her doctorate and, when Brad tells her it was always her, marries him on a beach and tells him she is pregnant.

Cooper finds Billie's journal and reads about the man she loved before him. The best sex in years follows, then shame and jealousy: he follows Brad to the gym, tries to copy what he has read and cannot measure up. At a sex party he tries to make Billie have sex in front of the guests; when she refuses, he lets Trina perform a sex act on him, then beats Devon for propositioning Billie. He blames her for putting darkness in him and tries to rebuild the marriage until she runs to Brad. Divorced, he goes on a spree of drink and sex with Devon that ends when he crashes a car drunk. Afterwards he tells Billie she is the love of his life; a month sober, he declares himself to an old girlfriend, Emily, and plans to propose.

Brad Simon’s story
In Billie's flashbacks Brad is the obsession of her twenties: his cruelty, his damaged family, the pregnancy she lost, the break-up. Now he is sleeping with her best friend, Sasha, tells Billie he still loves her, stands his ground when Cooper confronts him, and proposes; she says no. When she finally comes to his door, saying she will not leave her husband, he pulls back: his new girlfriend, Gigi, is pregnant. He marries Gigi, who suspects he still cares for Billie and forbids him to see her. When Billie's son goes missing, Brad is the one who knows to look in the park. By the time his own son is born, he and Gigi have split. At Sasha's wedding he tells Billie it was always her, and on a beach she marries him and tells him she is pregnant.

Why it matters
Sex/Life puts a married mother's desire at the centre and refuses to punish her for it. Billie wants her children, her kind husband and the sex she had with a man who was bad for her, and the series treats that wanting as real rather than as a crisis to be cured. It is less sure-footed with the rest: most critics found it more interested in its steamy set pieces than in its ideas, and Salon faulted how briefly it deals with Billie's miscarriage. Cooper's jealousy, which turns the reading of his wife's journal into her public humiliation, is its sharpest picture of insecurity curdling into cruelty. A shower scene in the third episode set off a wave of TikTok reaction videos. Its creator, Stacy Rukeyser, called the series a fairy tale and said it mattered to her that Billie not be punished for her desire. Netflix cancelled it after two seasons.
