A med-school dropout pretends to be drunk in bars to see what 'nice guys' do; the ending divided everyone.
Cassie Thomas is thirty, a medical-school dropout who lives with her parents and works in a coffee shop. At night she goes to bars and pretends to be too drunk to stand. When a man takes her home and starts to take advantage of her, she drops the act, sober, and confronts him. Her reason is Nina Fisher, her best friend since childhood, who was raped at a medical-school party by a classmate, Al Monroe, while others watched and filmed it. The university dismissed Nina's complaint. Nina dropped out and later took her own life, and Cassie, consumed by guilt, gave up her studies too.
Ryan Cooper, a former classmate now working as a paediatric surgeon, asks her out, and with him she begins, for the first time in years, to be happy. Then Ryan mentions that Al is getting married, and Cassie sets out to confront the people who let the assault happen. She gets Madison, a friend who blamed Nina for drinking too much, drunk over lunch and lets her believe she was assaulted in a hotel room. She makes the dean who dismissed the case believe her own daughter has been taken to the room where Nina was attacked, then tells her the girl is safe. She finds Al's former lawyer, Jordan Green, broken by guilt, and forgives him. Nina's mother begs her to let go and live.
Cassie tries. She introduces Ryan to her parents. Then Madison brings her a phone holding the video of the assault, and in it Ryan is watching. He says he was too drunk to remember. Threatening to release the video, Cassie makes him tell her where Al's stag party is being held. Disguised as a stripper, she drugs Al's friends, handcuffs Al to a bed and tells him she will carve Nina's name into his body. In the struggle he kills her, and his friend Joe helps him burn her body in the woods.
Cassie had planned for this. Before leaving, she sent the video to Jordan Green with instructions to go to the police if she did not come back. At Al's wedding the police arrest him for her murder, while Ryan's phone fills with messages she arranged in advance, the last signed "Love, Cassie and Nina".

Ryan Cooper’s story
Ryan was at medical school with Cassie and is now a paediatric surgeon. He comes into her coffee shop, asks her out and wins her round, and she introduces him to her parents. It is Ryan who mentions that Al Monroe is getting married. Then Madison brings Cassie the video of Nina's rape, and in it Ryan is among those watching. He says he was too drunk to remember and begs forgiveness. She refuses, and under the threat of the video he tells her where Al's stag party is. When she disappears, he tells the police nothing of where she went, only that she was not in a good place. At Al's wedding, as Al is led away, Ryan's phone fills with her messages, the last signed 'Love, Cassie and Nina'.

Why it matters
Promising Young Woman looks less at a rape than at the people around one: the friend who blamed the drinking, the dean who found too little evidence, the lawyer who discredited the victim, the classmates who filmed it, and the men who think of themselves as nice. It won Emerald Fennell the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay and became one of the most argued-over films of the years after #MeToo. The Washington Post called it polarising, a feminist subversion of the rape-revenge genre that cannot decide whether to cheer its heroine or fear for her. The ending is the centre of the argument. Cassie is killed and wins only through a plan she left behind, which leaves a hard question in place: what justice is open to women once every institution has already failed them, and what it costs the ones who go looking for it.
