A magazine writer raised to believe monogamy is unrealistic meets a sports doctor who disagrees.
In 1992 Gordon Townsend tells his small daughters, Amy and Kim, that he is divorcing their mother because monogamy is not realistic, and has them repeat it. Twenty-three years later Amy lives by it. She writes for a men's magazine in New York, drinks heavily, sleeps around and never stays the night, and is seeing a gym-obsessed man, Steven. Her cold British boss, Dianna, assigns her a profile of a sports doctor, Aaron Conners, who has not been on a date in six years and counts LeBron James, playing himself, as a friend.
During the interview a text from Kim about moving their father to a cheaper care home sends Amy into a panic, and Aaron calms her and takes her to dinner. She sleeps with him and, against her own rule, stays the night. When he calls the next day wanting to see her again, she tries to end it, and fails. When her father has a fall, Aaron drives her to him and treats him. They begin to date and fall in love.
Gordon dies. At the funeral Amy accuses Kim of never having cared about their father, and the sisters fall out. When Aaron tells her that day that he loves her, she berates him for his timing. At a luncheon where he receives an award, she walks out of his speech to take a call from Dianna. They argue all night, and he suggests a break. She tells him they are finished.
Drunk after a night out with colleagues, Amy goes home with the magazine's intern, Donald. Their encounter is interrupted by his mother, and Amy learns he is sixteen. The film plays the scene for laughs, but it is the sexual abuse of a minor, and Dianna fires her. Amy makes peace with Kim, clears the alcohol out of her flat and takes her story about Aaron to Vanity Fair, which publishes it. His friends, LeBron among them, stage an intervention to tell him to open up. At Madison Square Garden, Amy dances with the Knicks City Dancers to Aaron's favourite song, Billy Joel's 'Uptown Girl'. She tells him she wants to make it work, and they kiss.

When Amy panics during her interview, he calms her, takes her to dinner and praises her writing; when she tries to end it, he insists they should date. Why it matters
In Trainwreck it is the woman who drinks, sleeps around and runs from commitment, and the man who wants a relationship. Amy Schumer wrote the film and plays a heroine with her own first name, and it treats her promiscuity as a defence learned from her father rather than as a joke about women. Its real subject is inheritance: what a parent's cynicism about love does to a child who absorbs it, and how long it takes her to see that the rule was his, not hers. The comedy has blind spots, most clearly the scene with a sixteen-year-old intern, which is played for laughs and is abuse. Schumer was nominated for a Golden Globe for the role. The question it leaves is whether a person can unlearn the lessons that once kept her safe, and what she has to give up to do it.
