The Word Is Now Defined by the Question People Type.

A word that has been in use for a very long time is having its meaning rewritten, quickly, by a mechanism nobody designed. Meaning used to be transmitted by people who held the practice. Now it is established by what ranks when people look it up - and people look things up when they have a problem. So the word has been re-specified by the questions that bring people to it, which are overwhelmingly about a bedroom difficulty. Nobody decided this. There was no meeting. The word was re-specified by its own funnel.

A word that has been in use for a very long time is currently having its meaning rewritten, quite quickly, by a mechanism nobody designed and nobody controls.

This essay does not adjudicate what the word meant before. That is a scholarly question, it is genuinely contested, and this Library has no standing in it and will not pretend otherwise. What can be examined without any such claim is the machinery currently operating on the word, because that machinery is visible, ordinary and running in public.

This Library has written before about seven questions to ask anybody using this word, about a vocabulary assembled around a different customer, about a word that switches between description and prescription, and about the market in which listening acquired a price. Those arguments are credited here and not repeated. This is a cultural essay about how meaning is being set, and it belongs in a public library rather than in a brochure.

Meaning used to be transmitted. Now it is ranked.

For most of the history of any practice, the meaning of its name was carried by people who had the practice. It passed from person to person, slowly, with a great deal of loss and distortion along the way, and the distortion was at least the distortion of people who had some contact with the thing.

That transmission is no longer the dominant channel. For almost everybody now meeting the word for the first time, its meaning is established by what appears when they look it up, and what appears is determined by what performs well when people look things up.

This is not a complaint about any particular platform, and it is not a claim that anybody is lying. It is a structural observation. A meaning set by ranking is a meaning optimised for something, and what it is optimised for is being found.

Which means the word has been re-specified by the question people type

Here is the mechanism, and it is the core of this essay.

People do not look up words in the abstract. They look things up when they have a problem, and they describe the problem in the search, and what survives is whatever answers the problem as they stated it.

So the meaning of the word is now largely set by the questions that bring people to it. And the questions that bring people to it are, overwhelmingly, about a difficulty in a bedroom. Not about attention, not about time, not about restraint, not about anything that would be difficult to phrase as a problem.

The result is that the word now means, in ordinary usage, approximately: a technique for solving a particular kind of dissatisfaction. Whatever else it may have meant, that is what it means at the top of the results, because that is the shape of the demand that reaches it.

Nobody decided this. There was no meeting. The word was re-specified by its own funnel, which is a thing that can happen to any word that becomes commercially useful, and it happens without a single false statement being made by anybody.

The second force: a body of practice became a category of service

The first force sets what the word is understood to promise. The second sets what it is understood to contain, and it operates through billing.

Once something is sold by the hour, its definition quietly narrows to what can be charged for. Duration can be charged for. Contact can be charged for. A named sequence of things done in a room can be charged for and listed on a page.

What cannot be charged for falls out of the definition, not through anybody's dishonesty but through ordinary accounting. Restraint is unbillable. So is waiting. So is the decision not to proceed, the long approach, the part where nothing happens on purpose, and the ethical commitments that constrain what a practitioner will do. None of those can be itemised, so none of them appears on the page, and within a few years the word means what is on the pages.

This is worth stating carefully, because it is not an accusation. A business that lists what it offers is behaving normally. The point is that a definition assembled entirely out of billable items will be missing exactly the parts that were about not doing things, and in this particular case those parts may have been most of it.

The third force: it has to be explainable in one sentence

Anything that circulates now must survive compression. A practice that requires a long apprenticeship even to describe cannot travel, and a practice that can be summarised in a line travels indefinitely.

So the summarisable parts have displaced the rest. Breathing appears constantly, because breathing can be described in a sentence and photographed. Slowness appears, because slowness is a word. What does not appear is anything whose description takes a page and whose point is only visible after a considerable time.

The survivors of compression are not the most important parts. They are the most compressible parts, and those are different categories that happen to overlap occasionally.

The fourth force, which is newer and will matter more than the other three

Something has changed in the last few years that compounds everything above, and it is worth describing plainly because most readers are already living inside it without having noticed.

Increasingly, a person who wants to know what a word means never reaches a page at all. They read a summary, assembled for them, which draws on many sources and returns a settled-sounding paragraph. The experience is of consulting a reference rather than of reading somebody's marketing.

But a summary is an average, and an average inherits whatever the sources contain. If the available sources are overwhelmingly commercial descriptions - and for this word, they are - then the average is a commercial description. It simply arrives without the commercial tone, in the register of neutral fact, which is a far more persuasive register than any sales page has ever managed.

And the compounding is worst for the thing this essay has said matters most. Refusals are rare in the source material, and anything rare in the sources is invisible in an average. A summary will faithfully reproduce what a practice claims to do and will not mention what it declines to do, because almost nothing in its inputs mentions that either. The one signal a reader could have used to discriminate is precisely the signal that does not survive summarisation.

None of this requires anybody to be acting badly. A summary that averages its sources is doing exactly what it should. The problem is that a word whose public record was written mostly by people selling it will produce, on averaging, a definition written mostly by people selling it - now wearing the clothes of a dictionary.

The practical consequence for a reader is simple and slightly tiresome. On a subject where the available writing is mostly commercial, a summary is a summary of the marketing, and the only way to get anything else is to go and find the sources that were refusing things, which are always further down.

What is genuinely being gained, said without grudging it

A cultural essay that only listed losses would be nostalgia, and nostalgia is usually a bad guide and frequently dishonest.

A great deal has improved. A woman can now find out that something exists without being introduced to it by an intermediary who has an interest in her, which was the previous arrangement and was worse. Prices are visible and comparable, which removes an enormous amount of quiet exploitation. Information about what is and is not reasonable circulates freely, so somebody being treated badly has a reference point that did not previously exist.

And the compression that flattened the meaning has also made the subject sayable. A person who could not have raised any of this in conversation ten years ago can now read about it alone, at eleven at night, without asking anybody. That is not a small gain. It is very likely the largest single improvement in the whole area, and it was produced by the same machinery that did the damage.

And what is being lost, stated narrowly

The losses are specific rather than atmospheric.

The refusals are gone. Any practice worth the name is defined at least as much by what it will not do as by what it does, and refusals cannot be marketed, so they disappear from the public description of the thing and eventually from the expectations of everybody who meets it there.

The timescale is gone. Anything whose effects appear after several months is invisible in a market where the unit of consideration is an appointment.

And the honesty about outcomes is gone, because a page that promises less than the page next to it is found less often, and the mechanism that selects for findability selects for confidence.

What a reader can actually do with this

The practical consequence is a single reversal, and it is worth more than any list of things to look for.

Judge by the refusals rather than the claims. Anybody can write a claim. What is expensive to write, and therefore informative, is a refusal: what this person will not do, what they decline to promise, what they say is not their business, what they tell a reader to go and do elsewhere for nothing.

A page that only promises is a page assembled by the machinery described above. A page that contains a plain statement of what it cannot do has paid something to include it, which is the only reliable signal in a medium where claims are free.

This Library has published seven questions to ask anybody using this word, and they still apply. This essay adds one line to them: ask what the person has declined to sell you, and notice whether there is anything at all.

The ground this happens on

Two local conditions shape how the word arrived and what it now carries, and naming them is not an accusation against a country.

The word arrived here as an import, and an imported word has no earlier domestic usage to anchor it. It came in already attached to a market, which means the re-specification described above had nothing to push against: there was no widely held older sense for the commercial sense to displace.

And the surrounding commercial landscape is legally and socially complicated in ways that make plain description difficult for everybody operating in it. Where plain description is difficult, vagueness becomes the safest register, and vagueness is precisely the condition in which a word can be re-specified by whoever has the strongest commercial incentive.

This is observation rather than measurement. No figure is given, nothing is counted, no business, teacher or publication is named, and none of it is unique to one country. Every place where the word has become commercially useful is undergoing a version of the same process.

What this house has to declare, and it is not a small declaration

This house is one of the businesses inside the machinery this essay has just described. That has to be said at full volume and at the start of this section rather than at the end.

It benefits from the re-specification. A word that now means a solution to a particular dissatisfaction brings people to a page like this one, and this house sells hours. Anyone reading an essay about how a word got commercially reshaped, published by a business that profits from the reshaping, is entitled to a high degree of suspicion, and that suspicion is correct rather than cynical.

So here are this house's refusals, offered as the only useful thing it can contribute to its own defence. It does not claim to be transmitting a tradition. It does not claim that anything sold here is what the word originally meant, because it does not know what the word originally meant and neither does anybody selling with more confidence. It does not promise an outcome. It does not claim that an hour repairs a marriage, restores anything, or returns anybody to a truer version of themselves.

And the standing instruction in this Library applies to this house first: apply the seven questions here, notice what is and is not declined, and if this house ever publishes a page that promises without refusing anything, that page should be read as evidence about this house rather than as an exception.

Editorial note

This is a cultural essay about how a word's meaning is currently being set, published in the public Library because structural analysis of how a market shapes a vocabulary belongs to readers rather than to a brochure. It credits without restaging this Library's seven questions for anybody using the word, its essay on a vocabulary assembled around a different customer, its essay on a word that switches between description and prescription, and its essay on the market in which listening acquired a price.

It makes no claim about what the word meant historically, states that the question is genuinely contested, and says plainly that this Library has no standing in it. What it examines instead is three visible forces. Meaning is now established by ranking rather than transmission, and ranking optimises for being found. Because people look things up when they have problems, the word has been re-specified by the questions that bring people to it, which are overwhelmingly about a bedroom difficulty - so the word now means a technique for solving a dissatisfaction, without anybody deciding it and without a single false statement being made. Because the thing is sold by the hour, its definition narrows to what can be billed, so restraint, waiting, the long approach and the decision not to proceed fall out through ordinary accounting. And because anything that circulates must survive compression, the summarisable parts displace the rest, which selects for compressibility rather than importance.

The essay deliberately records what has improved - visible prices, freely circulating information about what is reasonable, and above all the subject becoming sayable to a woman alone at eleven at night without an intermediary - and states that this was produced by the same machinery that did the damage. The losses are stated narrowly: refusals, timescale and honesty about outcomes.

The practical consequence offered is a reversal: judge by refusals rather than claims, because claims are free to write and refusals are expensive. The house section states at full volume that this house is inside the machinery and benefits from the re-specification, that a reader's suspicion is correct rather than cynical, and lists this house's own refusals - no claim to transmit a tradition, no claim to know what the word originally meant, no promised outcome, no claim that an hour repairs or restores anything - and directs the seven questions at this house first. No teacher, tradition, business, publication, figure or study is named anywhere.
