Adults aged 35 to 60 farm and live together in an old house, looking for a last love without the usual gloss.
Love Village is a dating show for people between thirty-five and sixty, made by the team behind the travel dating show Ainori. Divorced, bereaved and never-married men and women move into an old farmhouse, repair it, cook and farm for themselves, and look for a last partner; two people who find each other leave the village as a couple. The pasts they reveal are retold in rotoscoped animation, traced over their own re-enactments. Atsushi Tamura and Becky watch from the studio.
In the first season, eighteen episodes streamed from May 2023, Okayo falls for Junpei, who is drawn to another woman. She refuses to measure herself against her rival, changes her clothes and make-up for him, works quietly beside him because it gives her a reason to be near, and cries when she is not the one chosen for a bracelet. Then she confesses, to settle it in her own mind, and he says yes: the village's first couple. Tocchan, a single mother of forty-five, makes the first confession of her life, to Sake-chan, and it succeeds. Yukorin, courted by several men, asks plainly what would happen if children did not come, and tells Taabo, whose family keeps many traditions, that she wants someone to build a family with rather than a family to join; they leave together. Mina-nee, a picture-book author of sixty, is caught between Numa-pii, an anime producer of forty-one, and Naka-san, a landlord of sixty whose former wife has died. Naka-san rings the village's bell of love with all his strength and asks her to be his partner for life. She turns him down, sensing he still carries his former wife. After the village they met again as friends and became a couple, and the final episode showed their wedding photographs.
At a reunion in September 2025 Junpei and Okayo were still together; Naka-san and Mina-nee, and Taabo and Yukorin, had parted. The second season moved to Okinawa in 2024, and a third, at the foot of Mount Fuji, begins on 6 October 2026.

Why it matters
Love Village asks whether love is still for people who have been divorced, widowed, ill or simply passed over, and answers by letting them be as clumsy and as brave as anyone. Dating shows had long treated romance as a young person's pursuit; Real Sound's critic pointed to later marriage and a growing number of unmarried people in middle age as the reality this one finally reflected. It spent six straight weeks in Netflix's weekly top ten in Japan, and more than four hundred people applied for the second season, most of them women and the largest group in their fifties. Its producer insists it is a documentary, not a dating show, and the talk bears him out: who will care for whom in old age, money, children and the fear of time running out. What stays is how ordinary the courage is. A woman of forty-five confesses for the first time in her life.
